A typical shift

Your shift, in six moments

Every committee works a little differently, but most shifts follow the same rhythm. Here is what yours will look like.

Smiling college student at a home desk with a laptop and coffee, ready to start her shift

Before you start

Be ready, not getting ready

Laptop charged, camera and mic tested, a quiet spot. Your first minutes go to work, not setup.

#marketing-committee

Good morning, team! On until 3 today, starting on the PALS recap post.

First thing

Check in and say hello

Check in on the Intern Hub, open Asana to see your tasks, and greet your committee in Slack so everyone knows you are on.

Catch up and choose

Answer what is waiting in Slack and email, check Asana, and pick the two or three tasks that matter most.

When your team meets

Build it together

Committee meetings, check-ins and office hours on Zoom. If you will be unavailable, let your team know in Slack.

Wrap up, then log off

Comment on every Asana task you touched, link your work, check out on the Intern Hub, and log out of NVEEE accounts.

Your schedule

You set your hours. Then you keep them.

This internship is virtual and flexible, within reason. Your hours are your workday, just as if you were reporting to an office.

1

Choose hours between 9 AM and 8 PM Eastern

Plan for 25 to 40 hours a week, Monday through Friday. Weekends are possible with approval in advance. No overnight hours, because your work still needs to be supervised.

2

Include your committee's meeting time

Your schedule has to cover the times your committee meets. We agree on your schedule together when you accept your offer.

3

Be reachable for every hour you set

On Zoom or not, answer on Slack, Zoom or email during your hours. That means not in class, not traveling, and not running errands.

For example

If your schedule says Monday, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM Eastern, we expect to reach you on Slack, Zoom or email at any time from 10:00 to 4:00 that day. Outside those hours, you are off.

Two meetings every week

These are the fixed times your schedule has to cover. Both are required.

All-Team Meeting

Once a week, 90 minutes on Zoom, with every intern and the Executive Director. Currently Thursdays, 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM Eastern.

Committee Meeting

Once a week, 1 hour on Zoom. Your committee sets its meeting time at the start of the term, and your schedule must include it.

Zoom time

How often do I need to be on Zoom?

It depends on your committee and the time of year.

Summer, our busiest season

While our summer leadership conferences for high school students are running, every committee is on Zoom more. Work moves at a much faster pace.

Administrative & Operational Support, and committee Chairs

On Zoom for most of your shift.

Marketing & Communications

Design and writing can happen off Zoom. Join your meetings, check-ins and general office hours.

On Zoom or not, you stay reachable during the hours you set.

Summer is our busiest season. The graphics, schedules and workshop materials you build are used at our Peace Ambassador Leadership Summit (PALS) conferences on university campuses.

Time off

Real breaks, planned ahead

We follow NVEEE’s calendar, not your school’s. Here is the time off every intern can count on.

Holidays

New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and the day after, and Christmas Day. If a holiday falls on a day you don’t normally work, there is no substitute day.

Two personal days each term

Request them on the Absenteeism Request Form at least two weeks ahead. Unused days do not carry over. Feeling sick or facing an emergency? Tell your supervisor before your shift starts.

Spring break and school breaks

These are not days off, just as they would not be at a job. With approval, you may move your hours to other days that week.

Exam week flex

During your final exams, you may move some of your hours out of that one week and make them up within the two weeks before or after. Request it at least two weeks ahead with your exam dates.

One day of service each term

Spend a shift volunteering, ideally in one of NVEEE’s own programs. The activity is approved in advance and confirmed by your supervisor afterward. Each term has a theme:

  • Fall: From Bystander to Upstander (October) or Beyond Random Acts of Kindness (November)
  • Spring: Lead Through Service (April)
  • Summer: Wellness in Action (May)

Recovery time after working on site

Work on site with us at PALS or the February Junior Counselor Service Retreat and earn matching time off, up to one work week: two days on site, two days off. Take it after the event, before your internship ends.

Earning academic credit or service hours? You still need to reach the total your school or award requires.

Quick questions

Yes, as long as they fall between 9:00 AM and 8:00 PM Eastern and include your committee’s meeting time. We agree on your schedule together when you accept your offer.

Weekends, yes, with approval in advance. Late nights and overnight, no: every shift needs to fall within supervised hours, 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM Eastern.

Use one of your two personal days for the term. Submit the Absenteeism Request Form at least two weeks ahead and let your committee know in Slack.

No. Our work continues during school breaks. With approval, you can move your hours around that week, for example to travel days or evenings within 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM Eastern.

Talk with your supervisor as early as you can. Life happens, and we will work out a plan with you. Repeated absences without notice may lead to a review of your internship.

Google Workspace, Slack, Zoom, Asana, Canva, and approved AI tools such as ChatGPT and Claude. Training is provided.

What we count on every day

  • Check in and check out on the Intern Hub every shift.
  • Log in to Asana at the start and end of every shift.
  • Keep the hours you set, and be reachable during them.
  • Reply to NVEEE email within 24 hours.
  • Mark a task complete only after the work is submitted.
  • Log out of every NVEEE account when your shift ends.

Keep exploring
