Before You Schedule

NVEEE is a small team, and each interview takes real time from our work. If you have not yet read Is This Internship the Right Fit? and What You’re Up Against, please start there.

Do Your Research: Go Beyond the Mission Statement

You will be asked what you know about NVEEE. Repeating the mission statement is not enough. A strong answer shows that you explored how the organization works and where you could contribute.

Read before your interview

Also read the page for your first-choice committee, and look at NVEEE’s social media.

A weak answer

“You work on bullying prevention and you hold summits.”

A strong answer

Names a specific program and what it does, explains how interns contribute to it, and connects it to your goals and your first-choice committee.

Be ready to discuss why you chose your committee, what you could contribute in your first month, and a time you met a deadline while working independently. If you are applying for a subcommittee that requires experience, be ready to show examples of your design or website work. Prepare at least two questions of your own.

New to nonprofits? Look up NVEEE on GuideStar by Candid and ProPublica Nonprofit Explorer, search Google News for recent coverage, and read national data on the problem we work on at StopBullying.gov. Then write down one program you could name, why it connects with you, and how your skills fit.

Interview Skills & Resources

Many applicants have never had a professional interview, and that is fine. Being unprepared is not. Open each topic below, practice out loud, and come ready to show us what you can do.

Four short guides you can read on your phone or print. Each one includes links to its sources.

This is not a request for your life story. Use Present → Past → Future: your school, major, and year; two or three experiences that relate to the role; and why this internship is your next step. Aim for 60 to 90 seconds, and practice it out loud until it sounds natural rather than memorized.

Leave out childhood stories, family details, and hobbies unless they clearly connect to the work, and never criticize a past employer or school.

Your 30-second pitch is the short version: who you are, what you offer, and what you are looking for. Record yourself, listen back, and cut anything that does not support the role. (Northwestern University, Yale University, U.S. Department of Labor)

Situation: brief context. Task: your responsibility. Action: what you did (say “I,” not “we”); this should be most of your answer. Result: the outcome and what you learned.

Prepare three to five real stories you can adapt: leadership, teamwork, a deadline, a mistake, and learning something new. If a story did not end well, focus on what you learned. (MIT CAPD, University of Cincinnati)

  • What do you know about NVEEE? Why NVEEE? Research beyond the mission statement and a genuine connection to our work.
  • Why this committee? That you read the committee page and can name the skills you bring.
  • Strengths and a weakness you are working on. Honesty and self-awareness, with examples.
  • A time you missed a deadline or made a mistake. Ownership and what you changed afterward.
  • How do you stay organized and motivated working remotely? Specific habits, tools, and a quiet place to work.
  • What questions do you have for us? “None” is a weak answer.

Strong questions: What does a typical week look like for an intern on this committee? What qualities do your most successful interns share? What would success look like in my first month? How do interns receive feedback? What are the next steps?

Avoid questions our website already answers, questions that focus only on your convenience, and questions about time off before you have an offer. (Idealist, The Muse)

Do: join a few minutes early; dress professionally; look at the camera; give specific examples; ask for clarification if a question is unclear; be honest about what you do not know; ask thoughtful questions.

Don’t: schedule an interview you have not prepared for; claim skills you cannot demonstrate; memorize answers word for word; share unrelated personal history; give one-word answers; speak negatively about others; check your phone. (Carnegie Mellon, Northeastern University)

AI tools may not be used during your interview, including tools that suggest answers in real time, unless the skills exercise explicitly calls for them. Reading AI-generated answers will end the interview. Interviewers notice the signs, and major employers have returned to live interview rounds for this reason (Computerworld).

Acceptable while preparing: practicing with mock questions, researching (then checking the facts), and asking for feedback on answers you wrote yourself. Not acceptable: reading or memorizing AI-written answers, claiming experience you do not have, or letting AI write your application for you. (Harvard, University of Illinois)

At a small nonprofit, the mission comes first, you see how every part of the organization connects, and decisions move quickly, so you are expected to check your own work and represent NVEEE professionally (The Muse, National Council of Nonprofits).

Working remotely means communicating more than you think you need to: confirm messages, share progress without being asked, ask questions early, keep consistent hours, and log your time accurately (Braven, GitLab).

Within 24 hours, send a short, personal email. Thank the interviewer, mention one specific topic you discussed, and restate how you would contribute. Subject line: Thank you – NVEEE [Committee] internship interview. (MIT CAPD, UCSF)

Respecting the Interview Time

  • Interviews are held on Zoom and last up to 45 minutes, including a 10–15 minute live skills exercise (see below).
  • Join on time from a quiet space with your camera on. Test Zoom and screen sharing beforehand.
  • If you need to cancel or reschedule, please use your Calendly link at least 48 hours in advance.

Expect a Live Skills Exercise

Every interview includes a short exercise, about 10 to 15 minutes, completed live on Zoom with your screen shared. It shows us what you can already do, and it gives you a realistic preview of the work.

What to expect

  • You will share your entire screen and start from a blank file or a sample file we provide.
  • The task matches your first-choice committee. Examples include a Canva graphic for Social Media Content Creation or Creative Services, a short Google Sheets analysis for Survey & Data Analysis, an outreach email for Community Outreach, or a simple automation plan for AI Tools & Digital Innovation.
  • We may change part of the task while you work and ask you to explain your choices.
  • AI tools are not permitted unless the exercise calls for them. AI Tools & Digital Innovation applicants will use AI openly and explain how they checked its output.
  • All materials are samples. Nothing you create during the interview is used by NVEEE.
  • Have free Google and Canva accounts ready. If you need an accommodation, email internship@nveee.org before your interview.

Why we do this

Live work samples are an established hiring practice. Research has long found that work-sample tests are among the better predictors of job performance [1], and in a 2022 SHRM survey, 56% of employers reported using pre-employment assessments [2]. Since 2025, employers including Google, Cisco, and McKinsey have brought back live, in-person interview rounds to confirm candidates’ fundamental skills [3], and a Gartner survey found that 39% of job candidates had used AI during the application process [4].

We use the same approach so that, from your application to your final evaluation, your NVEEE internship prepares you for how hiring works today.

Interview-Day Checklist

  • I read the pages above and can describe at least one NVEEE program in detail.
  • I can explain why I chose my committee.
  • I can give an example of meeting a deadline and working independently.
  • I tested Zoom, my camera, my microphone, and screen sharing.
  • I have free Google and Canva accounts ready for the live skills exercise.
  • I prepared at least two questions.
