Alston’s Story

I was a Victim of Hate and Ignorance

On the night of March 20, a friend and I went dancing at a local restaurant. We were there enjoying the local cover band and pretty much entertaining the crowd. When the time came for us to leave, two of the guys I was with wanted something to drink, so they reentered the establishment for some water. I stood outside waiting. While waiting, I saw in a distance a guy speed walking towards my direction from down the street. He was shouting to some of the guys in the parking lot “I’m gonna take a nigger with me.” He said this a few times until he approached me.  I noticed while he was walking towards me that the guy had his hand shoved inside his jacket to give the impression that he was holding a gun. I stood frozen confused as to what to do. I didn’t want to run and escalate the situation. The guy stood in front of me with his hand in his jacket shouting at me, “What kind of club is this? What were you guys doing in there? “And so forth. I remained calm and proceeded to walk towards to door to reenter the restaurant. This is when he said “tell your boys I got five other dudes out here with me.” I went inside and alerted the two other guys I came with and we prayed and devised a plan to exit the restaurant. As we exited from another entrance, some cops were coming down the road. I pulled them over and explained what happened. When they escorted us to the car, I heard one of them say, Oh they got the police with them.” It was a scary night that thankfully didn’t end up a fatal one.
