Young Adult-to-Young Adult (19-24)
January is National Mentoring Month
All young people have the potential to succeed in anything they do and contribute to society. However, not all children get the support they need to thrive. Without immediate intervention by caring adults, they can make choices that can hurt their future and put them at risk of not living up to their full potential.
A mentor’s main goal is to help our youth define their individual goals and find ways to achieve them. Most expectations of each child will be different, the mentor’s job is to encourage the development of a relationship that responds to both the mentor and the mentees needs. Mentors should understand they are not replacement for the mentees parents, guardian or teacher.
Adult mentors offer the support, advice, friendship, reinforcement and constructive examples to be a powerful tool for helping our youths fulfill their potential. By using your influence and resources as a decision maker, you can bring new hope to young lives through the power of mentoring. You might just be surprised how much you will benefit as well.
